Year in Review: 10 Favorite Images from 2008

George Barr and Mark Graf, two of my favorite photobloggers just did photo-year-in-review posts, and it go me thinking to doing my own. I don’t photography regularly enough to go month-by-month, so here are ten images from this last year that I really like (though some of them could have easily been others from the same shoot).

I posted a lot of images from 2007 in 2008, but here I am only going to post images taken and processed this last year, lest I be overwhelmed by the backlog from Ethiopia, Morocco, and the West. These are some of my favorite photographs from 2008, though there were plenty to choose from. As always, click on the image to be taken to its flickr page.

Chapel Door, S. John’s College, Cambridge, July 2008

Chapel Door, S. John's College, Cambridge, July 2008

Probably my favorite image of the year, made during a visit to a friend in Cambridge while I was in Britain for a conference.

Roof Bosses, Divinity School, Oxford, July 2008

From Oxford, a restrained study of the roof-bosses at the Divinity College.

Château d’Azay-le-Rideau #2, Indre et Loire, France, July 2008

Château d'Azay-le-Rideau #2, Indre et Loire, France, July 2008

This is one of those photos I went to France knowing I wanted to get (I also really wanted a photo of Ussé in the mist, but oh, well). It came out, but, due to being distracted with other things (that didn’t really pan out), and due to the difficulties of accessing Châteaux by public transit, I was never really in the good places in the right light (with the exception of Villandry, where I had forgotten essential camera parts *sigh*).

Basilique Saint-Martin, Tours, France, July 2008

Basilique Saint-Martin, Tours, France, July 2008

An image from France that I didn’t expect to come back with, taken while wandering the old part of the city, enjoying good light.

Tent Caterpillars, Ithaca, New York, June 2008

Tent Caterpillars, Ithaca, New York, June 2008

Tent caterpillars in a park near my friends’ house in Newfield (Ithaca), NY. Beautiful little creatures, they move faster than you would think possible for a caterpillar.

Cayuga Falls (Sepia), Rickett’s Glen State Park, Pennsylvania, June 2008

Cayuga Falls (Sepia), Rickett's Glen State Park, Pennsylvania, June 2008

A sepia version (color version here) of my favorite falls to photograph in Rickett’s Glen State Park, Pennsylvania, where I stopped on my way to Boston/Washington, D. C.

Ganoga Falls #2,Rickett’s Glen State Park, Pennsylvania, June 2008

Another falls from Rickett’s Glen, on a productive day of shooting.

Crossbearer, Meskel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2008

Crossbearer, Meskel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2008

On the whole, I think that this year’s Meskel ceremony was less photographically successful than last year’s, but I still got a couple good images, like this one.

Child, Gojam, Ethiopia, November 2008

Child, Gojam, Ethiopia, November 2008

I’ve been trying to do more portraits, and very-occasionally, as in this case, it has paid off.

2008 Lunar Eclipse

Made on a very cold night, in a parking-lot by the train tracks near where I lived in Toronto, my first eclipse photographs.
