Sutro Sam, San Francisco, California, 2013

‘Sutro Sam’ is a river otter that has found his way to San Francisco (from where is unknown, but Marin has been suggested, meaning he would have swum the Golden Gate) and taken up residence in the brackish waters of the ruins of the Sutro Baths. Recently featured on the news, he has been the subject of great curiosity, attracting modest crowds; regardless, he has been out and building a nest in an old concrete drain, from which he pops out his head from time to time.

Just as the light was fading, we came across this cow and calf alongside the track portion of the Track and Tower trail, causing a stop that meant we had to make the last of the trip in the dark. The light was almost gone, the rain slanted into the lens of the camera, so I was not able to get the quality of photos I would have liked, but it was wonderful to see the moose in such a natural habitat, and at such a reasonable distance.

I wanted to experiment a bit with a punchier, more-saturated look, and this is what came out of a shoot with Pop the cat.
Strobist info: 1 SB-28 in a shoot through umbrella camera right to fill open shade.

I was really interested in the second version of this image, with the cat looking into the laundry, when I was shooting it. On reflection, I think the a version is stronger, but I couldn’t resist sharing both.

That’s all the cat photos for this week–next week, dogs (more cat photos in the future!).

Update (17 April 2011): Apparently this photo has been turned into a mixed-media painting elsewhere on the internet:
